Family & Human Services

Under the Department of Community Services, the Family and Human Services (FHS) Division provides essential human services to residents in Santa Fe Springs. The FHS Divisions, housed at the Gus Velasco Neighborhood Center, is committed to the development, implementation of programs and services that enhance the social, mental, physical and intellectual abilities of children, families and older active adults. It cultivates and promotes the importance of family unity, self–sufficiency, health and wellness, recreational activities and intergenerational connections. The Family and Human Services Division also manages Heritage Park and the Historic Clarke Estate available for weddings, photo reservations, school tours and special events.

Older Adult Services

Older Adult Services provides a wide variety of activities and services to active adults 50+. Our goal is to foster a warm environment where active adults can enrich their lives through activities and services designed to meet the needs of our diverse older population. Older Adult Services also provides staff support to three senior clubs who utilize the GVNC, an on-site nutrition lunch program for seniors 60+ years of age and a homebound meal program for the senior population restricted to home care are provided through contractual services with the Southeast Area of Social Services Funding Authority (SASSFA). Transportation services are made available through Access, Santa Fe Springs Transportation and taxi vouchers for senior residents who require transportation.

Family Services

Family Services provides essential services for families. It provides a wide array of services through the Gus Velasco Neighborhood Center for city residents which includes educational workshops, legal services, volunteer income tax assistance program, Edison and Gas Utility assistance. Staff works closely with the local schools, outside community organizations, and county departments to explore, create and nurture the needs of families in our community. Family services also offers special services such as back to school supplies, campership programs, and Covered California enrollment.

Case Management

Case workers are available to respond to broad range of requests for service. Such services include client assessment, advocacy, referrals, brief counseling and crisis intervention. Case workers are also available for home visits and provide information and referral to other community agencies for needed services. We also offer financial assistance to qualifying Santa Fe Springs individuals and/or families.

Heritage Park

Heritage Park is a historic site and the buildings and grounds have been restored and registered as a State of California Historical site. The park hosts special events, meetings, weddings, photos sessions and educational tours. Annual signature events at Heritage Park include Pioneer Living Day (formerly Children’s Day), Concerts at the Park, Family Movie Nights, Las Posadas, and Día De Los Muertos that have strong cultural and historical significance.

Clarke Estate

The Clarke Estate, built in 1919, is listed in the registrar of Historical places with the California State Department of Parks and Recreation. The Estate provides for an intimate outdoor venue used for weddings, receptions, ceremonies, and other seasonal events. Recent restoration by the City of Santa Fe Springs includes improvements in the mechanical systems, landscaping and interior decoration. The Clarke Estate is open on Tuesdays, Fridays and the first Sunday of the month for guided tours.
