Gus Velasco Neighborhood Center
Renovation and Modernization Project Update

Some may be wondering if, during this period of extreme financial stress caused by the elimination of redevelopment funding, the City is going to be able to complete the already underway Gus Velasco Neighborhood Center renovation project. Others may ask whether it is prudent to move forward with the project during these economically uncertain times. The truth of the matter is that the funding source for this project will be going away, but enough funding will remain to complete the project. In fact, if we don’t use those funds, the City will essentially have to hand them over to the State. Therefore, construction activities continue at the Gus Velasco Neighborhood Center to complete the renovation and modernization improvements to the building.

The clay tile roof has been installed and other major infrastructure improvements (roof, electrical, plumbing, HVAC) are being constructed. The Gus Velasco Neighborhood Center is a vital asset to the Santa Fe Springs community. It is a multipurpose facility that provides a wide range of programs and services to residents and non-residents of all ages.

Although the City has continually adjusted to the economic challenges and recent challenges brought forth by the State, it is fortunate that under this new change, we will still be allowed to complete this very vital project in our community. With redevelopment money, the City was able to provide valuable resources to its residents and fund public works projects such as this one. Although we will no longer have the funds redevelopment provided to continue to fund these types of projects, we are pleased that the law will allow us to complete this project which will allow us to continue to provide our community the wonderful resources in a more up-to-date facility.
